Kelis doesn’t get nearly enough credit. She was one of the few visible pioneering alternative black female artists of the y2k era and her sound and aesthetic is present throughout the rest of the 2000s, with artists like Britney Spears, P!nk, Robyn, Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas, Nelly Furtado, Fergie, and Gwen Stefani all taking from Kelis’ signature swag. Her influence thus trickles down to more current artists like Doja Cat, SZA, Amaarae, and Kali Uchis.

Often overlooked is her visionary ability to adapt to different genres flawlessly, and her magnetic, sensual, raspy, and equally versatile voice is absolutely unmistakable.
